Student Pastor Opportunities
A student pastor is a seminary student assigned to lead worship and perform other pastoral functions on weekends. During this period, the presbytery will appoint a minister of the Word and Sacrament to moderate the session. The opportunity offers several advantages to small congregations including: consistency of weekly worship leadership, the availability of pastoral care for the sick or the hospitalized, and the church becomes a teaching congregation by providing practical experience for a student pastor.
If you are interested in a student pastor opportunity, please contact the Field Education office, Severance Room 230.

Supervised Practice of Ministry (SPM)
The SPM requirements for the M.Div. degree are eight hours,
four of which must be earned consecutively in a single ministry
setting. Students may register for SPM only after their first
full year of seminary. SPM must be undertaken in an approved
SPM setting and must include an average of one hour per week
of conversation and supervisory evaluation with an approved
field supervisor. In completing the eight-hour SPM requirement,
students must focus on at least four areas of pastoral ministry.
Areas of pastoral ministry include such tasks as preaching,
visitation, administration, teaching, counseling, and evangelism.
(For further information, see Supervised
Practice of Ministry in the Curriculum section).
