UD to Open New Academic Year

The 153rd Opening Convocation of the University of Dubuque will begin at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 21, in Westminster Presbyterian Church. Dr. Calvin DeWitt, professor of environmental studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and director of the Au Sable Institute, will deliver the address.

DeWitt is a scientist and conservationist who enjoys sharing his enthusiasm for the environment and for earthkeeping. He has lectured on caring for creation and has given campus-wide convocation lectures at more than fifty U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities. He has taken his message worldwide through travels to China, Korea, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Russia, Ecuador, and the United Kingdom.

The mission of DeWitt's organization, the Au Sable Institute, is to integrate knowledge of creation with biblical principles for the purpose of promoting a better understanding of the Creator and the stewardship of Gods creation. He has authored numerous papers in the field of ecology as well as two books: Earth-Wise: A Biblical Response to Environmental Issues (1994), and Caring for Creation: Responsible Stewardship of Gods Handiwork (1998).

Opening Convocation is an opportunity for the entire UD community to worship together and begin the academic year. Classes will be cancelled from 8:15 - 10:30 a.m. on September 21 to permit all College and Seminary students, faculty, and staff to participate. A reception will follow the Convocation in the Alumni Courtyard on the University of Dubuque campus.
