UD Receives Grant from Dubuque Racing Association

The Dubuque Racing Association awarded $16,172 to the University of Dubuque for the purchase of two custom glass display cases for the Charles C. Myers Library.

"I am so grateful to the Dubuque Racing Association for funding these beautiful exhibit cases," stated Mary Anne Knefel, university librarian, upon receiving the gift. "The Myers Library also serves as a community cultural center, and these new cases will enable us to sponsor high-quality, temporary exhibits that will complement both our curriculum and our permanent exhibits."

The installation of these exhibit cases provides larger, secure yet flexible space for more extensive exhibits of greater variety to be mounted. These cases will enable the University to host traveling exhibits organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibit Service (a branch of the Smithsonian) and the Mid-America Arts Alliance-Exhibits USA, a regional arts agency, among others.

In addition, the University can mount exhibits that support current curriculum, particularly such required core undergraduate classes as RES 104: Introduction to Research and Writing. Students in this class write research papers on specific areas of the world and exhibits would complement their research by providing them with a wider exposure to art work from around the globe. Examples of such exhibits might include African masks, Chinese writing systems, or South American textiles - thereby giving students a broader global appreciation and awareness. In a similar manner, exhibits will be mounted in support of other college and seminary classes. The exhibit cases will also be an ideal way to display artifacts from the University archives to educate our campus and wider community about the University of Dubuque's history.

The goal of this project is to provide students with an artistic experience of three-dimensional art and artifacts in an educational environment, readily available to both the UD community and the wider Dubuque community.
