UD to Open New Academic Year, Break Ground for New Facility

The 155th Opening Convocation of the University of Dubuque will begin at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 11, 2007 in Westminster Presbyterian Church. Groundbreaking for the Chlapaty Recreation and Wellness Center will be a part of this service, with a procession to the construction site.

The 2007 University Opening Convocation celebrates our heritage, honors our Presbyterian tradition and Christian commitment, the diversity of our community, and the pursuit of academic excellence. The academic procession, led by bagpiper Dr. Kirk Witherspoon, will begin the ceremony.

As part of the Convocation, we will process to South campus for a groundbreaking service for the new Chlapaty Recreation and Wellness Center. Dr. Joseph (C'68) and Linda Chlapaty, generous donors for whom this facility for students, faculty, and staff is named, will be present for the occasion. Dr. Chlapaty will deliver the Convocation Address titled Forty-three - a Perspective. Construction of the Chlapaty Recreation and Wellness Center, an 90,000 square foot facility, will include: a 2-level fitness center; a 200 meter, 6-lane indoor track; 4 multi-use courts for intramurals and indoor practices; a training room; home, visitor, officials and faculty/staff locker rooms; a juice bar/lounge area; a synthetic football field turf surface, new outdoor track, relocated tennis courts, and more. New visitor stadium seating on the east side of the existing field and a ticket stand/restroom facility were completed over the summer.

The Opening Convocation and Groundbreaking Service is an opportunity for the entire UD community to worship together and begin the academic year. Classes will be cancelled from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. on September 11 to permit all College and Seminary students, faculty, and staff to participate. A reception will follow the Convocation and Groundbreaking Service at the Chlapaty Center construction site on the University of Dubuque campus.
