UD Names Miyamoto Dean of Student Life

University President Jeffrey F. Bullock today announced the appointment of Dr. Michael H. Miyamoto as Dean of Student Life. Dr. Miyamoto will begin his service to the University on August 3, 2009.

"I am very pleased that Michael Miyamoto has accepted the University's offer of appointment as Dean of Student Life," stated President Bullock. "He comes to us with twenty years of significant experience at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse and I believe he will provide leadership to the Student Life area, a key element in our campus community life."

Michael Miyamoto is a native of La Crosse, earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at UW-La Crosse, and his Ph.D. at the UW-Madison. He has taught middle school art and coached football and track in La Crosse, served as Assistant Director of Career Services at UW-River Falls, and in 1989 was appointed Assistant Dean of Students at UW- La Crosse.

As Assistant Dean of Students, Miyamoto was responsible for student judicial matters, served as ombudsperson for students in crisis and for student constituent groups, was executive director of the Campus Child Center, developed and advised the Men United Against Sexual Assault student organization, directed New Student Orientation Programs, and co-developed the First-year Student Experience Curriculum.

"I am delighted to join the University of Dubuque, and pledge to do all that I can to assist in providing our students with an environment that supports their intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth and development, commented Dean Miyamoto.

Miyamoto will serve as the University's chief student life officer with cabinet-level responsibilities, providing leadership for Residence Life, Campus Ministry, Career Service, Multicultural Services, Health/Counseling Services; be of counsel to the theological seminary, and in cooperation with the Director of the Wendt Character Initiative, have responsibilities in implementation of the Initiative.
