UD to Hold Relationship Abuse Forum

On Thursday, April 29, the University of Dubuque will present Educate. Empower. End It. , an educational forum on relationship abuse. The forum will be held from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. in the Stoltz Sports Center, and will begin with an informational presentation followed by a professional panel discussion. The forum, sponsored by the Office of Counseling and Life Services, is free and open to the public.

"After losing my daughter, Holley, in July 2008, I wanted to make a difference - to turn the tragic loss into something good for someone else," stated Jesse James, dean of admission and forum participant. "By telling Holley's story, it highlights the deadly potential of partner/spousal abuse. In this forum, we seek to educate people on the common traits that abusers share and how to avoid entering into a dangerous relationship with a person who has abusive tendencies. We also will talk about what to do in the event one finds him/herself in an abusive relationship. We want to save people from a life of fear and harm."

This student-centered educational forum is an effort to prevent domestic and sexual violence by enhancing the well-being of all individuals within and outside the University community.

By opening up a discussion on this serious topic, the panel hopes to:

  • encourage the promotion of safe environments for the empowerment and exploration of personal strength;
  • advocate for social change by collaborating with internal and external resources to deliver information to the campus communities; and
  • provide resources to individuals who have experienced domestic and sexual violence, regardless of race, national origin, gender, sexual identity, religion, immigration status, age or ability.
