University of Dubuque Students Look to Raise Awareness, Funds

On April 9, 2010, resident assistants at the University of Dubuque will hold a Box City event on the campus Quad in an effort to raise awareness about homelessness in the City of Dubuque and raise funds for the newest homeless shelter in the city, Josiah House.

Box City started as a simple camping event on campus, but has morphed in a philanthropic endeavor to raise awareness about homelessness in the City of Dubuque. Resident assistants from across the campus have involved the campus community in assisting the Josiah House, a Dubuque Catholic Worker House, in raising funds and resources to help the shelter thrive.

Box City is an all night event with activities beginning at 5:00 p.m. Participating members of the campus community will sleep in cardboard boxes provided by local businesses. The event will encompass various activities that will allow participants to experience what a homeless individual goes through on a daily basis. Rain or shine, Box City will take place.

"Some people don't have the luxury of shelter in inclement weather," said Nick Landmesser, Aitchison Area Coordinator and advisor for the Box City event. "It's important for the event participants to experience Box City in any type of weather. This is an excellent opportunity to educate the campus community about the homeless community - it's not an area of concern we talk about often enough."

Josiah House, located on Loras Boulevard, is a non-profit organization that provides shelter, as well as supplies and food, when possible. As a new shelter in the community, the Josiah House has established a wish list of the supplies needed to more effectively provide for its occupants.
