Goesse Recipient of Father Norman White Memorial Scholarship

Senior Environmental Science major, Megan Goesse (Dubuque, IA), was recently named the recipient of the 2010 Father Norman White Memorial Scholarship.

Goesse served as an intern at Swiss Valley Nature Center in Peosta, IA during the summer of 2010. Her work included helping groups of children to learn about and appreciate nature. Upon graduation from UD in May 2011, she plans to attend graduate school in environmental education. According to Dale Easley, head of the UD's department of natural and applied sciences, "Megan is actively concerned about environmental issues and is passionate about educating others. She has been a pleasure to work with. Her enthusiasm is contagious."

The Father Norman White Memorial Scholarship is presented by the Dubuque Soil and Water Conservation District in honor of Father Norman White and his work. Recipients of the award attend (or plan to attend) the University of Dubuque, Clarke University, Loras College, University of Wisconsin-Platteville, or Northeast Iowa Community College - Peosta or Calmar Campus, and are pursuing a degree within an agricultural and/or natural resources related field. A $1000 scholarship is awarded annually, and presented to the recipient at the August meeting of the Dubuque Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioners.

Father Norman White was a Roman Catholic priest who had been a long-time advocate of preservation of the family farm and of soil and water conservation. He had served as the Rural Life Director with the Archdiocese of Dubuque for 11 years. During his tenure in that office, he received national and international recognition for his efforts to promote conservation education. Father White passed away at the age of 72 on August 28, 1996.
