UD Opening Convocation to Mark 158th Year


The 158th Opening Convocation of the University of Dubuque will begin at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 21, in Westminster Presbyterian Church. James L. Martin, University trustee and retired circuit court judge from Dane County, Wisconsin, will deliver the convocation address.

"Opening Convocation gives us the opportunity to celebrate the beginning of a new academic year and to share in the traditions that make UD such a special place," commented President Jeffrey F. Bullock. "We are honored to welcome the Honorable James Martin, Class of 1967, as our convocation speaker. His message of integrity and ethics speaks directly to the development of a campus culture that nurtures the formation of excellent character and reflects the University's Mission and values."

James Martin, served the City of Madison, Wisconsin for 25 years, working first as an assistant city attorney and then as city attorney. As city attorney, he practiced in the area of municipal law and provided advice and counsel to elected representatives and department heads. In 2003 he was appointed Dane County circuit court judge where he served until his retirement in 2009. He was active in the State Bar of Wisconsin and served on the Board of Governors, the Committee on Professional Ethics, the Board of Attorneys Professional Responsibility Study Committee, and the Government Lawyers Task Force. Simultaneously, he served as a Fellow of the Wisconsin Bar Foundation and a member of the Wisconsin Judicial Council. Martin is also a former teacher with the Unified School District of Racine, a former assistant football coach at the University of Wisconsin, and has worked as a high school and college basketball official for over 20 years. He earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Dubuque in 1967 and a juris doctor degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1977.

A reception will follow the Convocation in the Alumni Courtyard on the University of Dubuque campus.
