University of Dubuque Computer Information Systems Club Receives $2000 Grant

The University of Dubuque's Computer Information Systems (CIS) Computer Club, for students majoring in, or interested in, CIS, recently received a $2000 grant from the Alliant Energy Foundation to support a computer-building project.

Members of the club gain exposure to the field by way of speakers, tours, and special projects. In addition, they aid the Dubuque community by hosting events such as a clinic to troubleshoot, tune, and fix community members' computers. Their next project is to undertake the building of several computers "from scratch."

Teresa Nickeson, assistant professor of CIS, commented, "This project will help ready students for in-demand, technical jobs. This kind of activity may also draw additional students to the club and major."

Funds from the Alliant Energy Foundation will fund the purchase of several computer kits and monitors. A project of this scope will provide students with the opportunity to build computers via an experiential learning project as well as to learn more about, and practice setting up, a computer network. Students will work collaboratively in teams on this project.
