UD to Host Second Annual B-Sides Iowa Computer Security Conference

The second annual B-Sides Iowa Computer Security conference will be hosted by the University of Dubuque over the weekend of April 6-7, 2013.

B-Sides Iowa is a free information security conference for all experience levels. B-Sides events are a community-driven framework for building educational, peer-organized events in the information security community. These events create opportunities for individuals to both present and participate in an atmosphere that encourages collaboration. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interactions from participants.

Last year's inaugural B-sides Iowa conference was held as a one-day single-track event in Ames, Iowa.  This year's event has been greatly expanded to a two-day event which includes two speaking tracks, a dozen speakers, three workshops, a networking party, multiple competitions, and a lock picking village.  Attendees at this year's event will learn more about a wide range of security topics, from how to secure wireless networking to having a better understanding of physical security by learning how locks work and how they may be bypassed.

"This year's B-sides Iowa conference represents the first major computer security event in Eastern Iowa," commented Dr. Phil Polstra, assistant professor of computer information systems and 'hacker in residence.'  "It will showcase work by many security professionals in the region.  I find it fitting that this event is hosted by the university which will launch the region's first bachelor's degree in Digital Forensics this coming fall."
