University of Dubuque Receives Three Grants for Upcoming Humanities and Arts Events

The University of Dubuque has recently received three grants totaling $7,000 from the Iowa College Foundation, Iowa Arts Council, and Humanities Iowa to fund humanities and arts events to take place April 3-8, 2005. The Carnegie-Stout Public Library will co-host some of these events.
"The generous support of the Iowa College Foundation, Iowa Arts Council, and Humanities Iowa will enable the University to offer exciting arts and humanities events for both students and the Dubuque community," Paula Carlson, associate dean for academic affairs, said after receiving notification of the awards. "These gifts enable us to cultivate a greater appreciation for the arts and humanities in our students through a new literary art magazine, art exhibits, and gallery talks, where the University will have the opportunity to share the fruits of these grants with the wider community."
The Iowa College Foundation, in combination with the Foundation for Independent Higher Education (FIHE) UPS National Venture Fund, awarded U.D. a $1,000 grant to subsidize the cost of the layout, design, and printing of Articulate, the new UD literary art magazine. The magazine will debut on April 3, 2005. Over the past 50 years, the Iowa College Foundation has provided $55 million to 25 member private colleges and universities to assist in providing students a high-quality education in Iowa.
The Iowa Arts Council awarded U.D. $1,000 to support the development of the new literary art magazine as well as the "Interface: Word and Image" opening event on April 3, to include "The Edge" art exhibit; presentations by Professors Ann Pelelo and Alan Garfield; and readings and gallery talks by students. Formed in 1966, the Iowa Arts Council offers funding provided through the State of Iowa and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Council offers various programs and services to strengthen community life via the arts in order to make the arts available to all Iowans.
Humanities Iowa awarded U.D. $5,000 in support of the "Interface: Word and Image" series of events planned for April 3-8, 2005, to include presentations by author, filmmaker, and comic strip writer Max Allan Collins, and Arthur and Bonnie Geisert, writers and illustrators of children's books. Founded in 1971, Humanities Iowa is committed to bringing the humanities to life and to the public through interactive programming, publications, and events. An affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities in Washington D.C., Humanities Iowa serves over 70,000 Iowans with humanities programming and projects totaling over $1,500,000 each year.
With the help of these grants, the University of Dubuque will enhance its humanities and arts opportunities for both students and the wider community.
