The University of Dubuque recently received $4,000 from the Harold R. Bechtel Testamentary Charitable Trust (Davenport, Iowa) to establish Harold R. Bechtel Scholarships for entering students from Scott County, Iowa. Funds will be awarded for the 2006-2007 academic year.

"We are pleased to offer these scholarship funds to students from the Scott County area," said Tim Kremer, dean of student financial planning and scholarships. "Having a variety of scholarship opportunities to offer allows us to help students with varied interests and from many different backgrounds."

The Bechtel Foundation was founded in 1964 by Harold R. Bechtel, Marie H. Bechtel, and R. Richard Bittner. The Bechtel Trusts became active in 1998 and are for the purpose of creating investment income to be used for charitable, scientific, literary, and educational purposes.

It was Harold Bechtel's wish that "the assets of this trust& will continue in perpetuity for the use and benefit of the Scott County, Iowa, community, its institutions, and its people."

"We are acquainted with the University of Dubuque and are fully satisfied that the education provided to [students from Scott County] is one which not only educates them but also makes them cognizant of the fact that this is a good place in which to live," stated R. Richard Bittner, Bechtel Foundation Trustee.

Approximately 8-12 students from Scott County enter the University of Dubuque each year.
