University of Dubuque Celebrates the Arts

The University of Dubuque will host a series of events titled The Character of Art; The Art of Character in a week-long celebration of the arts, April 21-26. The University will host author Robin Hemley on campus as part of the inspiring and energetic celebration.
Award-winning author and director of the Nonfiction Writing Program for the University of Iowa Writer's Workshop, Robin Hemley joins the event on Wednesday, April 26. Hemley is the recipient of The Nelson Algren Award from theChicago Tribune and The George Garrett Award for Fiction from Willow Springs. He will read an excerpt from one of his works, followed by a book signing.
Hemley has published eight books of nonfiction and fiction. His popular title, Turning Life into Fiction (Graywolf Press, 2006),will be reissued in an expanded version this month. He has published his work in many of the best literary magazines in the country, including Ploughshares, Prairie Schooner, North American Review, and many others. His fiction has been widely anthologized, translated, and heard on NPR's "Selected Shorts" and others.
Another of his works, Invented Eden: The Elusive, Disputed History of the Tasaday (Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, 2003) was an American Library Association's Editor's Choice book for 2003. His memoir, Nola: A Memoir of Faith, Art and Madness (Graywolf, 1998), wonan Independent Press Book Award for Nonfiction. His first issue of Turning Life into Fiction (Graywolf Press, 2006), was a Book-of-the-Month Club selection as well as a Quality Paperback Book Club Selection, and has sold over 40,000 copies. His other works include The Last Studebaker (Graywolf), The Big Ear (Blair), and All You Can Eat (Atlantic Monthly Press).
Events throughout the week feature involvement by both the college and the seminary and include two student art exhibits-- The Edge and The Word Became Flesh; the launch of Articulate, a literary and visual arts student magazine; gallery talks by UD students on their original artwork; concerts by the University of Dubuque Choir and Band; the dramatic performance of Ken Dashow's Da Show Must Go On;a panel presentation and discussion on Art, Truth, and Character; and Voicing Creation's Praise: Worshiping through the Arts.
"We are very excited about this year's Arts Celebration," said Dr. Ann Pelelo, assistant professor of English and project director for the events. A great number of dedicated faculty and staff have worked diligently for nearly a year to put together a diverse schedule of events. We are especially pleased that this year's events encompass so many aspects of the world of art-- music, dramatic performance, fiction and nonfiction, graphics-- and that many events highlight our theme which is the intersections between character and the arts."
