University of Dubuque Choir to Tour Southeastern States and Puerto Rico
May 7, 2007 | University of Dubuque Theological Seminary
Members of the University of Dubuques Concert Choir will perform concerts in four states - Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Illinois and in Puerto Rico on a 11-day tour, beginning Monday, May 14.
The choir, under the direction of Dr. Charles Barland, will perform a variety of works including Psalm settings, Spirituals, and Folk Songs. "We are very excited to travel as a choir to the Southeast U.S. and Puerto Rico," said Barland. "For many of our students, this will be their first trip to this area. The choir is eager to share our music, meet new people, and see many wonderful sites."
The history of music at the University of Dubuque goes back to the early part of the twentieth century. As early as 1918, there was a co-ed choral music ensemble, a men's glee club, a band, and an orchestra. Beginning in the 1920s, the concert choir toured regularly. Concerts were performed in churches and schools throughout the Midwest.
Today the University of Dubuque Choir is returning to its heritage - growing in numbers and expanding its performance schedule. This year, choir events included a joint performance with the University of Dubuque Seminary Choir at the annual Fall Convocation, Homecoming weekend performances, a fundraiser/dinner concert, UD's annual "Christmas on the Quad," a Hymn Festival, and a spring concert during the University's 2007 Arts Celebration.
