John V. Puotinen, senior vice president for advancement, announced the appointment of Claude John Jones as director for church relations. Jones' service began on July 1, 2007.

"We are pleased to have a person with Claude's in-depth pastoral experience and enthusiasm for the mission of the University of Dubuque joining us in this key position. He has a passion for the important and influential role of the college and the seminary in the life of the church and the community, and he can communicate this message effectively with individuals as well as church organizations," says Puotinen.

Jones earned his bachelor of arts degree from Augustana College (Sioux Falls, SD), and his master of divinity degree from the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary. Throughout his career in ministry, he served Iowa churches in Calmar, Cedar Rapids, Decorah, Des Moines, Dubuque, and Waucoma, as well as the Hospital Ship HOPE in Brazil. He has served as moderator for the Des Moines Presbytery; presbyter in John Knox, East Iowa, and Des Moines Presbyteries; commissioner to the General Assembly, and moderator of the congregational care committee of the Des Moines Presbytery.

As the director for church relations, Jones will develop and strengthen relationships with congregations and church organizations in support of the University and will work to create greater understanding of the mission of the University of Dubuque as a Christian learning community.

Upon his appointment Jones said, "The mission of Christian higher education serving the church was the goal of the founders of the University of Dubuque in the 19th century. That goal continues today into the 21st century. I look forward to promoting and sharing that mission with the people and institutions of the churches that are served by the University."
