UDTS Announces New Faculty

Dr. Bradley Longfield, dean of the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary (UDTS), announces the following appointments: Rev. Amanda Benckhuysen, Instructor in Old Testament; Rev. Matthew Schlimm, Instructor in Old Testament; Rev. Annette Bourland Huizenga, Instructor in New Testament; and Rev. Timothy M. Slemmons, Assistant Professor of Preaching and Worship.
Rev. Amanda Benckhuysen holds a B.A. from Queen's University (Kingston, Ontario, Canada) and a M.Div. from Calvin Theological Seminary (Grand Rapids, MI). She is finishing her Th.D. dissertation at Wycliffe College, University of Toronto (Toronto, Ontario, Canada). An ordained minister in the Christian Reformed Church of North America, she has served local churches in Toronto, Ontario and as a campus minister at the University of Michigan. Benckhuysen has been as an instructor and guest lecturer at Wycliffe College and Calvin Theological Seminary. She has published essays in Recovering 19th Century Women Interpreters of the Bible published by the Society of Biblical Literature, as well as written book reviews for the Journal of Hebrew Scriptures (6, 8), and other theological journals. She is a member of the Canadian Society of Biblical Studies; the Society of Biblical Literature; and the Committee to Study the Third Wave Movement, a denominational study committee of the Christian Reformed Church.
Rev. Matthew Schlimm holds a B.A. from Asbury College (Wilmore, KY), a M.Div. from Duke Divinity School (Durham, NC), and is completing his Ph.D. at Duke University (Durham, NC). Schlimm has served as an instructor, preceptor, teaching assistant, and research assistant at Duke Divinity School. He is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature, the American Academy of Religion, and the Wesleyan Theological Society. His publications have appeared in the Catholic Biblical Quarterly, The Cambridge Companion to the Bible, The Wesleyan Theological Journal, the Review of Communication, and the Society of Biblical Literature Forum. Schlimm has been invited to speak on numerous occasions at The Society of Biblical Literature and Duke Divinity School. An ordained elder in the United Methodist Church, he has served as a ministry coordinator for the Duke Youth Academy for Christian Formation, and as an associate pastor and interim supply pastor for churches in Minnesota and Michigan.
Rev. Annette Huizenga holds a B.A. from Vassar College (Poughkeepsie, NY), a M.REd. from Wesley Theological Seminary (Washington, D.C.), and an M.A. from McCormick Theological Seminary (Chicago, IL). She is finishing a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago (Chicago, IL). She has served in numerous teaching positions at the Catholic Theological Union, McCormick Theological Seminary, and The Divinity School, University of Chicago. Huizenga was ordained by LaSalle Street Church in Chicago, IL (nondenominational) and served as pastor from 1989 - 1999. She was managing editor of the Daughters of Sarah, a Christian feminist magazine from 1981 - 1989. She has been a presenter at the Society of Biblical Literature and the University of Chicago, and has been published in the Journal of Religion. Huizenga is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature, the Catholic Biblical Association, and The Chicago Society of Biblical Research.
Rev. Timothy Slemmons holds a B.S. from Kansas State University (Manhattan, KS), a M.Div. and a Th.M. from Columbia Theological Seminary (Decatur, GA), and a Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary (Princeton, NJ). A minister in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Slemmons has served churches in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Jamaica. He has also served the New Brunswick Presbytery on Presbytery Council, and the Pittsburgh Presbytery as vice-chair of the Christian Education and Spiritual Growth Unit and chair of the Resource Center subcommittee, as well as CPE chaplain at the Scottish Rite Children's Medical Center in Atlanta, Georgia. A past recipient of the David H. C. Read Preacher/Scholar Award, his articles and sermons have appeared in Journal for Preachers, Lectionary Homiletics, and Interpretation, among other publications. He is a member of the Academy of Homiletics, Søren Kierkegaard Society, and the American Academy of Religion.
