University of Dubuque Athletic Director Dan Runkle announced today, Wednesday, December 17, the appointment of Stan Zweifel as Head Football Coach for the University of Dubuque Spartans.

"I'm very excited to be the next head football coach at the University of Dubuque," commented Zweifel. "The support from President Jeffrey Bullock, Dan Runkle, and the UD community has shown a great deal of interest in the football program and also in the student-athletes doing well in and out of the classroom."

"The national search moved along quickly and, after reviewing many quality applicants, we have chosen an individual I believe who will make a significant contribution to achieving our University's Mission," stated Runkle. "Intercollegiate athletics are an important part of the University's cocurricular program. We believe Coach Zweifel is the person to take our football program to the next level, while providing a solid educational experience for the student-athletes"

Zweifel comes to Dubuque from Minnesota State University-Mankato where he was the Offensive Coordinator this past fall. The Mavericks ranked among the American Football
Coaches Association (AFCA) Top-25 for the first time since 1995. This season the Mavericks finished second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and advanced into the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time since 1993.

Prior to Minnesota State, he was the Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater from 1991-2007 where they won six conference championships and earned two Division III Championship game appearances in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. During his sixteen year tenure at UW-Whitewater, they won 75 conference games and lost just 34. In his final two seasons at Whitewater, the football team finished 28-2 overall.

As a head coach at the University of Minnesota-Morris from 1987-1991, he finished with 22 wins and 18 losses, winning a conference title and being named Coach of the Year in 1987. He also was the head coach at Yankton College from 1983-85 where his squads finished 10-8-2 overall. Zweifel has published seven books on offensive football and has produced 37 videotapes on a variety of subjects related to offensive football topics.

"My job is to get out there and show the high school student-athletes what a great school the University of Dubuque is and to get the word out about the educational programs and intercollegiate athletics," stated Zweifel. The facilities here take a backseat to nobody. The Iowa Conference is one of the top Division III conferences in the country and I am very excited to be coaching in this conference."
