University of Dubuque Student Receives Aviation Scholarship

University of Dubuque aviation student Amber Sulzner (Junior, Mechanicsville, IA) has been named the recipient of the Delta Air Lines Aviation Business Management Scholarship. The scholarship includes a $5000 monetary award as well as round trip airfare and registration fees to the Women in Aviation International Conference held February 25-28, 2009 in Atlanta, Georgia.
"It has been my pleasure to work with Amber as an active member of the University of Dubuque Women in Aviation Chapter," said Polly Kadolph, professor of aviation. "Amber conducts herself with a great deal of integrity, professionalism, and enthusiasm; she is an outstanding example of how tenacity, a positive attitude, and refined leadership skills combine to result in amazing achievements. She continually exhibits great enthusiasm for involvement in the industry."
The Delta Air Lines Aviation Maintenance Management / Aviation Business Management Scholarship is awarded to a student currently enrolled in an Associate or Baccalaureate degree in Aviation Maintenance Management or Aviation Business Management. In addition to the $5,000 tuition scholarship, the recipient will receive a trip to the 20th Annual International Women in Aviation Conference (includes round trip airfare, hotel accommodations, and conference fee). Applicants must be a full-time college student, with a minimum of two semesters left, (as of March 2008), with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (4.0) or better. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen. In addition to all WAI requirements, applicants must submit a 500-1000 word essay.

Women in Aviation, International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the encouragement and advancement of women in all aviation career fields and interests. WAI began in 1990 and was formally established in 1994 to encourage women to seek opportunities in aviation. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, of the nearly 700,000 active pilots in the United States, less than six percent are women and only slightly more than two percent ATP rated. Women account for only 2.13 percent of the more than 540,000 non-pilot aviation jobs in the United States.
