UD Web of Life Student Organization Receives $5,000 Grant from Jenzabar Foundation

The University of Dubuque student organization Web of Life has been awarded a $5,000 grant by the Jenzabar Foundation. Ten Student Leadership Awards are given to universities throughout the U.S. by the Foundation, recognizing student-led campus groups and projects that have made a significant contribution to better the world in projects in the community outside of their institutions.
"In recent years, we have been very fortunate to have highly motivated student leaders in Web of Life with exceptional guidance by the club advisor, Dr. Gerald Zuercher," says Dr. Dale Easley, head of the Department of Natural and Applied Sciences. "We are grateful to the Jenzabar Foundation for recognizing and supporting their work with such a generous grant."
Web of Life serves as the campus environmental awareness organization. The group is responsible for increasing environmental stewardship and outdoor education to meet the recreational, intellectual, social, and vocational needs of the student body. The organization has impacted student involvement in environmental awareness and education programming within the Dubuque community, from the group's ongoing participation in a highway clean-up program and increasing recycling efforts, to their effort to restore Osprey, a fish eating bird of prey, in eastern Iowa. The Jenzabar Foundation was particularly impressed with the community environmental-education efforts of Web of Life and hopes the funds can be used to expand that outreach.
Nearly 150 Student Leadership Award submissions were received from students, non-profit organizations, and institutions across the globe, representing ongoing activities or projects completed during the 2008-2009 academic year. The nominations were evaluated according to the community service or humanitarian endeavors, beneficiary impact, campus influence, model, outcome, and presentation. As a recipient, Web of Life has demonstrated a commitment to making a difference through environmental awareness and community service, and the $5,000 grant will help them to continue their work.
