The University of Dubuque's Department of Natural and Applied Sciences (DNAS) has received a $5000 grant from the Alliant Energy Foundation to support students' field research and transportation expenses.

The University's Department of Natural and Applied Sciences has a strong field-based program for both science and non-science majors. The goal is to take students off campus to expand their understanding and appreciation of the variety present in the natural world and to foster their intellectual growth. To date, extended trips have taken students to California, Wyoming, New Orleans, Paraguay, and the Boundary Waters. Weekend trips have included Chicago and its museums and zoos, the St. Louis Zoo, Maquoketa Caves, and the International Crane Foundation.

Dale Easley, chair of the Department of Natural and Applied Sciences commented, "A survey of our science majors has indicated that one of the most attractive parts of our program is hands-on labs and the opportunity to do field work and research, including using the DNAS boats, traps, and other equipment. Being off-campus is an integral part of both our environmental-science and biology degree programs that we want to maintain and extend."

Funds from the Alliant Energy Foundation will help the DNAS to maintain vehicles and equipment, train students in first-aid and field safety, and help fund trips. Of the $5000, $2500 will be used to offset transportation costs for 36 students for upcoming field trips to Minneapolis and New Orleans; $2000 will support research projects by approximately 20 science majors; and $500 will support local transportation to field sites for class laboratories - benefitting approximately 50 students.
