May 6, 2010 | University of Dubuque Theological Seminary

On Saturday, May 8, during the University of Dubuque's 158th Commencement Ceremony, Michael Breitbach - the fifth son of Michael and Cindy Breitbach of Balltown, Iowa to attend UD will carry on a family legacy and graduate from the University.

"Breitbach's of Balltown and the University of Dubuque were founded in the same year - 1852 - and we are honored to have shared 158 years of service to the State of Iowa and the tri-state region," stated President Jeffrey F. Bullock. "We are also honored and humbled by the Breitbach family's investment, support, and confidence in the University by enrolling five sons on our campus."

Following in the footsteps of his brothers Anthony (C'07, BS in business; C'09 MBA), Benjamin (C'06, BS in environmental science and biology), Matthew (C'04, BS in environmental science and biology for secondary education), and Peter (C'03, BS in environmental science), Michael will earn the degree bachelor of science in biology.

The Breitbach family and the University of Dubuque share in the intimate knowledge of what it means to experience great hardship and come back even stronger - the Breitbach's with two tragic fires, and the University emerging from the early Transformation years - 1998-2001. The University joins others around our great state and this wonderful country who know the Breitbach story and admire the courage, determination, pure grit, and strong faith that inspired the Breitbach family to rebuild from the ashes not once but twice. With the help of neighbors and friends, they overcame personal discouragement representing the best of what we as Iowans hope to be.

The University of Dubuque will confer degrees on 301 undergraduate and 52 graduate students during Saturday's Commencement Ceremony, beginning at 1:00 p.m. in the Chlapaty Recreation and Wellness Center on the University of Dubuque Campus.
