University of Dubuque Theological Seminary Student Receives Apollos Scholarship

The Omaha Presbyterian Seminary Foundation has recently announced the recipients of the Apollos Scholarship Program. Apollos scholarship awards continue the tradition of the Presbyterian Theological Seminary at Omaha, which opened in the fall of 1891.
Four Apollos Scholarship are awarded each year, and provide $6,000 annually honoring leaders who envisioned providing support for seminarians in the Midwest region. First-year Master of Divinity students may receive a maximum of $18,000 during their three-year program. This year, one of the top four scholarships, The Howard B. Dooley Scholarship, was awarded to a student of the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary (UDTS). Mr. Andrew D. Smothers will begin his second year of study at UDTS this fall. He is a member of the Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church in Iowa City, Iowa, and is under the care of the East Iowa Presbytery.
"I'm truly honored to be a recipient of the Apollos scholarship and am thankful to the Omaha Presbyterian Seminary Foundation for this award," stated Smothers. "Through my training at UDTS and planned experiences in parish ministry, overseas mission, and hospital chaplaincy, I hope to discern a specific ministry calling that demonstrates the Gospel of Christ actively within our world with deeds in addition to words. My passion is to find a role in ministry that regularly demonstrates the deep-rooted relevancy of the Gospel to our daily lives. This generous gift will assist both my studies and my exploration of this call."
Scholarship applications are submitted by members of Presbyterian Church (USA) congregations who are under the care of their presbyteries as either an Inquirer or Candidate for ministry. Applicants must be accepted by one of the 10 theological institutions under the jurisdiction of the Presbyterian Church (USA). This year's recipients were selected from a field of 70 applications.

faith, and his diligent work in service to Christ and the church."
The Omaha Presbyterian Seminary Foundation offers financial assistance to those seeking to become ordained leaders in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Following the Apollos Program tradition begun in 1954, the Foundation has provided over $3 million in funds given directly to seminarians to use as their needs dictate.
