University of Dubuque Inducts Two Members to Faculty Hall of Fame

The University of Dubuque inducted two new members to its Faculty Hall of Fame on Thursday, May 6, 2010. David Moessner, professor of biblical theology, was recognized with the John Knox Coit Prize, and Samuel Deaver, assistant professor of business, was recognized with the William Lomax Award.
David Moessner
David Moessner earned the bachelor of arts from Princeton University, the master of divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary, the bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees from the University of Oxford Honours School of Theology, and the doctor of theology from the University of Basel (Switzerland). He has served the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary since 1997. Prior to his appointment at UDTS, he held appointments as assistant professor of New Testament, Yale University, and as associate and professor of New Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2008 Moessner was honored as an honorary professor of biblical theology at the University of Pretoria (South Africa) and in 2009 was named to the Cambridge Who's Who of Executives and Professionals . Moessner is known as a leader among the faculty for his active scholarship, publications, and service within the scholarly community. His choices show outstanding character and concern for others. Graduates remark what is uncommon about their professor, is his ability to bring the scholarly study of the Bible spiritually alive. He helps his students to use the fullness of their intellect and the fullness of their faith in exploring the meaning of the Scriptures for their preaching, their teaching, and their own growth.
"Dr. Moessner is highly attuned to the needs of his students," commented Lyle Vander Broek, professor of New Testament. "David uses a variety of methods to involve students in learning. He cares about them as people. In his role as a teaching professor at UDTS, he has set the bar very high indeed."
Samuel Deaver
Samuel Deaver earned his B.S. in business administration degree from Peru State College (Peru, NE) and his MBA from the University of Dubuque. He has been teaching undergraduate and graduate level classes at UD since 2002. Prior to joining UD he was the C.E.O. of Harvest Savings Bank (now a part of USBank) and has served on the Board of Directors of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines. Deaver has been recognized by his colleagues as one of UD's best teachers, with students praising him for the depth of his knowledge, his respect for them, and the energy he brings to his work. At UD, he introduced a large-scale, nationally normed simulation activity into an MBA course he teaches and not only has this innovation significantly improved the course, but his students are ranking alongside students from Stanford, Northwestern and Harvard.
"I have greatly respected the courage it took for him to launch himself from a successful corporate career into the academy'," stated John Stewart, academic dean. "He risked entering the unfamiliar territory of the classroom because he was hungry to learn and wanted to encourage students to do the same."
