Barland to Present Faculty Recital at St. Raphael's Cathedral

On Tuesday, February 22, the University of Dubuque will present a faculty recital featuring Charles Barland, organ, and the University of Dubuque Concert Choir. The recital will be held at 7:00 p.m. at St. Raphael's Cathedral, 231 Bluff Street, Dubuque. It is free and open to the public.

Charles Barland was appointed director of the University of Dubuque Concert Choir in 2002 and currently serves as associate professor of music. He serves as department chair, conducts the Concert Choir; teaches courses in general music studies; serves as organist for college events and seminary worship services, and teaches applied lessons. Prior to assuming this position, Dr. Barland was an adjunct faculty member at the University of Dubuque and Loras College and was minister of music at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Dubuque.

A native of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Charles Barland earned the bachelor of arts degree at Carroll College, Waukesha, Wisconsin, the master of arts degree at the University of Iowa and the doctor of musical arts degree at the University of Kansas. He has studied organ with Phyllis Stringham, Delbert Disselhorst, James Higdon, Delores Bruch, and Michael Bauer. His choral mentors include Mark Aamot, William Hatcher, Richard Bloesch, and Simon Carrington.

In addition to his responsibilities at the University of Dubuque, he is an active member of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra Board, serving on the artistic advisory committee and the education committee and is sub-dean of the Dubuque Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. He serves as an organist at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Dubuque and First English Lutheran Church in Platteville, WI, and is a volunteer in the Big Brothers program in Dubuque.

The recital will feature the music of Alexandre Guilmant, Tomas Luis de Victoria, Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, Gwyneth Walker, Franz Liszt, Jehan Alain, and Peter C. Lutkin.
