UDTS to Offer Master of Arts in Missional Christianity Utilizing Distance Education

The University of Dubuque Theological Seminary (UDTS) has been approved by both the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association and the Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools to provide a Master of Arts in Missional Christianity degree (M.A.M.C.) with half of the courses offered via the Internet. Applications are now being accepted for this new degree program, with classes beginning in August 2011.
"We are delighted and excited to be the first Presbyterian (PCUSA) seminary to offer two graduate theological degrees utilizing distance learning," stated President Jeffrey Bullock. "The overall goal of UDTS is to strengthen the church by providing quality theological education for clergy and laity. As part of ourMission and Vision, UDTS has led the way in the development and implementation of distance learning opportunities for the church."
UDTS has a strong track record for successful distance learning programs. The Seminary has been providing a distance track for the Master of Divinity since the summer of 2007, and online training for lay pastors and laity since 2000.
Seminary Dean Bradley Longfield states, "Accreditation by these two bodies is an affirmation of the quality of teaching and learning in distance education programs offered by UDTS. Our faculty and staff are committed to using new and creative techniques to serve Christ and the church in the years ahead."
The Higher Learning Commission accredits degree-granting post-secondary educational institutions in the North Central region. The Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada is a membership organization of more than 250 graduate schools that conduct post-baccalaureate professional and academic degree programs to educate persons for the practice of ministry and for teaching and research in the theological disciplines.
The distance M.A.M.C. will operate on a cohort model, meaning a class of students will matriculate in August each year, and move through the program together. Twice a year, students will come to the UDTS campus for two week residential-based intensive courses. Through this powerful combination of distance and residential learning, participants will be able to earn the 48-credit Master of Arts in Missional Christianity degree in about two and a half years.
