University Receives Grant for Aviation Bibliography

The University of Dubuque recently received a generous grant from the Alfred L. and Constance C. Wolf Aviation Fund to produce a bibliography of writings about and by women and minority aviators.
The Alfred L. and Constance C. Wolf Aviation Fund's mission is to support worthy projects which advance the field of aviation by "increasing the public's knowledge of aviation through publications, seminars, and other information media." Since 1992, the Wolf Aviation Fund has awarded numerous grants to support and promote general aviation.
"As a teacher of aviation history, I have noted an acute lack of organized information on the contributions made to aviation by minorities and women since the early days of flight," commented Joe Suarez, associate professor of aviation at the University of Dubuque and director of the bibliography project. "Such a bibliography will provide a source for researchers, students, employers, and enthusiasts of aviation history to obtain information for further reading."
Suarez and student assistants will research publications and resources, including the Federal Aviation Administration Library, aviation museums, NASA, and other libraries to create a bibliography. Their goal is to enable others to find information on the little known contributions to aviation made by women and minority aviators.
The bibliography will be located on the University of Dubuque Aviation Department and the University of Dubuque Library web sites. It will be searchable by date or name and will be accessible on the public portion of the website. Suarez also hopes to disseminate the results of the project's research at various aviation education conferences, including the University Aviation Association and Women In Aviation.
"The University has a long-time commitment to diversity," said John Stewart, vice president for academic affairs. "This project demonstrates another avenue to improve public understanding and perception of the contributions of women and minorities. Learning of the contributions and achievements of these pioneers will provide a role model for our students."
