University of Dubuque Receives $3000 in Scholarship Funds

The University of Dubuque has received three- $1000 American Legion of Iowa Foundation scholarships to support ROTC or veteran students in their junior, or senior year. The grant recognizes veterans or ROTC cadets as American Legion of Iowa Foundation scholarship recipients and provides additional support to cover the costs of higher education not covered by the GI Bill.
The Universitys ROTC program reinstated in 2002 currently enrolls 43 cadets (38 from the University of Dubuque, four from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and one from Loras College). Three of UDs students are also veterans. The ROTC programs primary purpose is to develop strong leaders through classroom study, hands-on training, and team-building exercises. Students gain the leadership skills they need to succeed in both the military and the corporate world. As a values-based program, ROTC focuses on integrity, personal courage, respect, and honor as the basic foundations for successful, competent leaders. In addition to their coursework, cadets also prepare for the Ranger Challenge often held at Ft. McCoy in Wisconsin, as well as the Warrior Forge at Ft. Lewis in Washington.
The American Legion of Iowa Foundation Scholarships will recognize students for their academic achievement and reward them for their dedication to their country and commitment to higher education.
The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, war-time veterans organization, devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is a not-for-profit community-service organization which now numbers nearly 3 million members, men and women, in nearly 15,000 American Legion posts worldwide.
