UD Bestows Honors

Today, the University of Dubuque bestowed high student, faculty, and staff honors upon five individuals and one student organization at the 2012 Honors Convocation at Westminster Presbyterian Church.  The University Leadership AwardStudent of the Year AwardSenior Academic Athletic Award, Student Organization of the Year Award, Faculty of the Year Award, and Staff of the Year Award, were announced at the conclusion of the ceremony.

Robyn Heacock received the University Leadership Award.  This award, given annually, is the highest leadership honor awarded by the University.  It is given to the student who has shown commitment beyond personal gain, served fellow students, encouraged and promoted positive actions in others, and demonstrated in his or her personal life the true spirit of the Mission of the University of Dubuque.  Robyn, the daughter of David and Donna Heacock of Bellevue, Iowa, is a senior majoring in accounting and business administration.

Ashley Barwick received the Student of the Year Award.  Given annually by the Student Government Association, this award recognizes an undergraduate college student who exemplifies those qualities of personal, college and community achievement the University seeks to honor. This student has an above-average classroom record and is involved in campus and/or community activities. The Student of the Year is chosen by election of the general student body from a list of finalists selected by the Student Government Association.  Ashley, the daughter of Kevin and Elizabeth Barwick of Appleton, WI, is a senior majoring in accounting and business administration, with a minor in psychology.

Christopher Matteson received the Senior Academic Athletic Award.  This award is the highest honor awarded by the University's athletic department.  It is given to the student athlete who has demonstrated an excellent academic record and has made a major contribution to his/her team in the athletic area.  The recipient must also demonstrate the personal qualities that are inherent in the Mission of the University and the Wendt Character Initiative.  Christopher, the son of William and Katherine Matteson of Janesville, WI, is a senior majoring in aviation management and flight operations, with a minor in military science.

The University of Dubuque Movie Club received the honor of Student Organization of the Year.  This honor, awarded annually, is given to a student organization that shows dedication to campus involvement, leadership, and the betterment of campus life as a whole.  The recipient is chosen by election of the general student body.

Lawrence Muzinga, associate professor of business, received the Faculty of the Year Award.  The Student Government Association gives this award annually to a College faculty member who is an outstanding teacher with a positive attitude, who has the ability to motivate, and who has earned the respect of his or her peers.  The Faculty of the Year is selected by election of the general student population from a list of finalists selected by the Student Government Association.

Vic Popp, director of recreation and World View Seminar faculty member, received the Staff of the Year Award.  Given annually, this award is given to a staff member who unselfishly devotes his or her time and energy in support of the University. The Staff of the Year is chosen by election of the general student body from a list of finalists selected by the Student Government Association.
