DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque is pleased to announce that Annette Bourland Huizenga, PhD, has been appointed dean of the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary. A New Testament scholar, Huizenga has served on the faculty since 2008 and as assistant dean since 2016. She succeeds Bradley Longfield, PhD, who returned to full-time teaching in 2016 after 18 years as dean.

Huizenga was a member of the team that helped developed UDTS’s comprehensive plan for the future, “A New Day Dawning.” Since June 2016, she has played a leadership role in enacting this plan, which has resulted in new programs and increased enrollments.

“Annette’s love for the Seminary and for the church have been evident to many of us as she has worked with faculty and staff to position the Seminary for the new realities of theological education. Her extensive pastoral experience and depth of theological scholarship provide us all with a model of how to serve Christ’s church through theologically informed leadership” said Mark Ward, vice president for academic affairs.

Huizenga said, “I am so honored to take on this role at UDTS. I’m especially enthusiastic about continuing to work with our dedicated and creative faculty and staff as we discover what we are called to do to train leaders for God’s mission in these challenging times of rapid change.”

Huizenga was ordained to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament at LaSalle Street Church-Chicago, where she served as one of the pastors for 10 years. She holds degrees from Vassar College, Wesley Theological Seminary, McCormick Theological Seminary, and the University of Chicago Divinity School, where she completed a PhD in 2010.

Her scholarly interests circle around the social-historical contexts of early Christian communities: family structure, slavery, women in the Pauline assemblies, Roman law and economy, and education. She is the author of Moral Education for Women in the Pastoral and Pythagorean Letters: Philosophers of the Household in the Novum Testamentum Supplements series (Brill, 2013) and 1-2 Timothy, Titus written for the Wisdom Commentary series (Liturgical Press, 2016).
