The University of Dubuque has received a $1000 grant, provided, in part, by the Iowa Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts, to fund the University's Poet-in-Residence Fall Reading Series.
UD Announces $6 Million Investment in Academic Programs

University President Jeffrey F. Bullock today announced the distribution of a major investment in academic programs by University Board Chair Joseph and Linda Chlapaty. Over $6 million in funding, a gift from the Chlapatys, will be used to support the establishment of endowed academic chairs for the undergraduate college in chemistry, mathematics, economics, and for the seminary in church renewal. A summer research fellowship in science and mathematics has also been created in the undergraduate college.
UD Slates Fall Theatre Production

The University of Dubuque Fine and Performing Arts Department and the UD Drama Club will present Howard Ashman and Alan Menken's Little Shop of Horrors as its fall 2011 production. The show begins each evening October 27-29 at 7:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall on the University of Dubuque campus.
Barland to Present Faculty Recital at St. Luke's United Methodist Church

The recital will be held at 8:00 p.m. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 1199 Main Street, Dubuque. The performance is free and open to the public.
UD to Induct Four into Athletic Hall of Fame

Saleem Ghubril (S'91), executive director of The Pittsburgh Promise and co-pastor of Mosaic Community Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will deliver the convocation address titled "What Am I to You?"
Light Up Chalmers Commemorates 9/11 and Kicks-Off Spartan Home Football Season

On Saturday, September 10, the University of Dubuque will host its fourth annual Light Up Chalmers community event - the opening home football game of the 2011-2012 season. Students, staff, and faculty as well as tri-state residents are invited to cheer on the Spartans as they take on the Anderson University Ravens. The evening begins with kickoff at 6:00 p.m. and concludes with a post-game fireworks display.

University of Dubuque Receives Substantial Gift for Endowed Scholarships

The University of Dubuque has recently received a generous gift of more than $800,000 from the estate of Helen E. Knuth (1912-2010) to establish the Paul and Sara Knuth Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship is named to honor the memory of Helen's parents, Paul, a philosophy professor at UD from 1912-1919, and Sara Walker Knuth. Paul died in 1919 at the age of 39, and Sara was left with two young daughters to support. Sara told her daughters she was fortunate to have a college education. Paul and Sara's commitment to education inspired their daughters, and this scholarship recognizes the high value the family placed on education.
UD for KIDS Celebrates 20 Years of Fun!

The Summer 2011 UD for KIDS program began on Monday, June 20 - marking the 20 year anniversary for the popular children's program. This year's program will bring young students to the campus during the weeks of June 20-24 for grades 1-2; June 27 - July 1 for grades 3-4 and July 11-15 for grades 5-7. Classes will be held each day from 12:30-4:00 p.m. at the University.

The University of Dubuque recently received two grants totaling $8,993 from the Iowa Science Foundation (ISF) to pilot the research projects, "Nutrient Cycling in Two Rehabilitated Mississippi River Backwater Lakes," and "Delineating the Role of microRNA Mediated TCP Gene Regulation in Orchid Floral Development."
McElroy Grants Received for Student/Faculty Collaborative Research

The R. J. McElroy Trust has awarded four grants - totaling $7380 - to support undergraduate student/faculty collaborative research in the Department of Natural and Applied Sciences at the University of Dubuque. Tori Ballweg C'12 (Madison, WI), Christine Grannis C'12 (Peyton, CO), and Gabrielle Gronau C'12 (Dubuque, IA) will work with Dr. Gerald Zuercher, associate professor of biology and environmental science, to assess flying squirrel populations at the Mines of Spain Recreation Area; Lucas Chase C'12 (Colesburg, IA), Logan Webb C'12 (Batavia, IA), will work with Dr. Adam Hoffman, assistant professor of environmental chemistry, to explore how road deicing salt affects our soil and aquatic ecosystems; Aaron Matthews C'13 (Dubuque, IA) and Marcus Prull C'13 (Monticello, IA) will work with Dr. David Koch, assistant professor of environmental science, to determine the amount of movement of the three trout species within the Swiss Valley portion of Catfish Creek; and BreAnn Nesteby C'13 (Dubuque, IA) will work with Dr. Rasika Mudalige-Jajawickrama, associate professor of plant biology, to assess the genetic diversity of native orchid species in Dubuque county.
UD Alum and Native Alaskan Icon, Walter Soboleff, Dies

Flags around Alaska are at half mast this week. They honor Walter Soboleff, a University of Dubuque alum (College '37, Seminary '40), Alaskan native son and icon who passed away Sunday, May 22, at the age of 102. Before his passing, he was the University's oldest living alumnus.
University of Dubuque Inducts Two Members to Faculty Hall of Fame

The University of Dubuque inducted two new members to its Faculty Hall of Fame on Thursday, May 5, 2011. Dale Easley, head of the Department of Natural and Applied Sciences, was recognized with the John Knox Coit Prize, and Janet Jamieson, associate professor of accounting, was recognized with the William Lomax Award.
UD ROTC Commissions Cadets

Six U.S. Army ROTC cadets will be commissioned as Second Lieutenants during a May 12, 2010 ceremony at the University of Dubuque. The ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. in Steffens Hall of the Charles and Romona Myers Center, and will feature Major General (Ret.) Robert Felderman (C'88) as the keynote speaker. The ROTC Eagle Company, headquartered at the University of Dubuque, is open to students from all three Dubuque institutions - UD, Loras, and Clarke - as well as the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
